CLIVE BUCKLE Lt. Cdr. RN (1949 - 1953) died on 6 August 2007, as we were informed by his widow Jean. After Pangbourne, Clive joined the Royal Navy and retired in 1980. During his career he spent four years in the Netherlands, helping to install a simulated trainer for the Dutch Navy and then to teach its use.
After he left the Royal Navy he was asked to return to Holland in a private capacity, to help design more trainers for the Dutch Navy. On his return to England he developed his IT skills and set up his own consultancy, which continued until his death.
He was heavily involved in the life of Denmead, amongst other things fighting off a bid by the local council to take over the War Memorial Hall for office facilities and later in organising and publishing the Village statement, a government requirement for all towns and villages. Recently this document was in the hands of every official involved in a house planning appeal by Taylor Wimpey and many people told me how they wished Clive was still here to lead the opposition.
It is particularly sad to have to report that Clive had gone into hospital for what was routine surgery. In the recovery unit he was given an incorrect drug which caused cardiac arrest from which he never recovered. Apparently, the hospital admitted responsibility. It was a sad end to an otherwise healthy and amazingly strong man.
