Obituaries


Dick Hayes died in July, 2010, aged 88. He was a loyal OP throughout his life and attended the Reunion in 2009 at the Royal Yacht Squadron of which he was a member. Ian Shuttleworth represented the OP Society at the memorial service at Trinity Church, Cowes, Isle of Wight on July 15.

GEORGE M. HARRISON (1936 – 1939) died in January 2010, aged 86. He served throughout the war, firstly in the Merchant Navy but he then transferred to the Royal Navy, serving in the Mediterranean and in the Far East.  After the war, he moved into advertising, becoming, firstly, advertising manager of the British Travel Association and finally, in 1970, of Arthur Guinness, based in Park Royal.

CLIVE BUCKLE Lt. Cdr. RN (1949 - 1953) died on 6 August 2007, as we were informed by his widow Jean. After Pangbourne, Clive joined the Royal Navy and retired in 1980. During his career he spent four years in the Netherlands, helping to install a simulated trainer for the Dutch Navy and then to teach its use.

Trevor Turner (39-43) died in University College Hospital, London, on May 8th, 2010, after a short pulmonary illness. He was 85. He was Vice President of the OP Society, twice Chairman of the Society, served on the committee for several six-year stints and edited the letters from OPs that appeared in the OP magazine in the 1980s and 1990s.

PETER M G WISDOM (1950 – 1954) died in April 2010, as reported by his cousin Michael Langran (1943 – 1947). On leaving, Peter joined the Hall Line, then moved ashore to work for Silvertown Services Shipping Limited, owned by Tate & Lyle, where he was their southern representative. In the 1970s he worked for Kapok Limited and then retired to live near Cheltenham.

Simon Marcus Harvey (52-55) died on 2 March 2010, aged 71. A proud and enthusiastic OP, he was in recent times a forthright member of the OP committee.
