Successful CWP reunion held in Singapore
02/06/2011
Thirty "delegates" and 23 wives treated to virtually non-stop entertainment at the biennial Australasian Conway, Worcester, Pangbourne reunion held in Singapore in late-May.
Paddy Evelegh (58-61) writes: "The turnout in Singapore was slightly smaller than on the average meetings of this group but it had the distinct advantage that we could all be transported around in one coach - rather than the requirement of two or three for larger gatherings.
We thoroughly enjoyed the get-together and the four Conway guys domiciled in Singapore really laid it on for us. Only three OP's were able to make it (there should have been four, but Don Barton's (47-52) wife had some medical problems at the last minute) - Geoff Rae (53-56) from Brisbane, Charles Stuart (54-57) from Melbourne and myself from Perth - so we had the country triangulated. Members came from as far afield as London, Hong Kong and Wellington with the majority from various parts of Australia.
We were entertained at the Tanglin Club on three separate occasions, including the official dinner where Geoff Rae cleverly represented the NCP in the friendly banter that is always in the wings between the three former maritime colleges. Having had to listen to the ordure from the other two establishments, Geoff had the advantage of being able to counteract their arguments and with the final presentation he was well able to turn the tide completely in our favour. He had also done some good homework beforehand which always helps!
The Singapore team arranged for visits to the new port facilities with a harbour cruise, the Changi prisoner of war museum and the new Ship Simulator facilities at the Maritime Polytechnic not to mention some excellent venues for some fine dining.
Consequently, most of those attending vowed to pull out all stops to make the next gathering which will be in Brisbane in two years time."
