OPs meet Mahatma Gandhi relative

31/05/2011
OPs Anjali Guptara (1995-99) and Mike Smith (1960-65) met with Rajmohan Gandhi, journalist, author and grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, and his wife Usha, at the Nehru Centre in London, 24 May.

They were at the launch of Rajmohan Gandhi’s new book ‘A tale of two revolts: India’s mutiny and the American civil war’, published in London by Haus Publishing and in India by Penguin Books India. Rajmohan’s earlier biography of his grandfather ‘Gandhi: the man, his people and the empire’ was acclaimed for its objective and honest portrayal, William Dalrymple writing: ‘Rajmohan’s Gandhi’s weighty, authoritative and comprehensive biography is a great achievement.’ Rajmohan Gandhi is a visiting professor in South Asian History at the University of Illinois. He was the Editor-in-Chief of Himmat newsweekly in Mumbai (Bombay) where Mike was production manager for three years in the 1970s. He and Rajmohan have been colleagues for over 40 years.

Mike and Anjali had not met before the book launch and were glad to exchange notes on their common links with Pangbourne College and with India. Anjali presents the documentary film ‘India’s forgotten women’, highlighting a dark secret suffered by Dalit women, trailer at:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8lP7CAaofc
