03/12/2009 OP Society reception for Olympic gold medal winner
The OP Society celebrated Andrew Simpson's (90-95) gold medal at the Beijing Olympics at a reception on board HQS Wellington in London on November 30th.

More than 60 OPs and their guests were present at a reception on board HQS Wellington, moored alongside the Victoria Embankment in central London, on the evening of November 30th. The centrepiece of the event was the presentation to the winner of a painting of Andrew Simpson's victory (with partner Iain Percy) in the "Star" class sailing event at the Beijing Olympics .

Completed by the noted seascape artist Rowena Wright, the painting shows Andrew with his arm aloft just after crossing the line in the final race of the series. Andrew brought along his gold medal and it was displayed over the painting during the reception.

Speeches were given by Capt. Stephen Taylor (55-60) of the Honourable Company of Master Mariners who own HQS Wellington through a Trust, OP Society chairman Mark Dumas, Andrew Simpson and Headmaster Thomas Garnier. In his remarks Steve described the close Pangbourne links with the Master Mariners and urged OPs to make use of the Wellington facilities. For his part, Andrew described his punishing training regime, the ups and downs of his Olympic triumph and his current preparations for the 2012 Olympic sailing event at Weymouth.

A happy occasion was complimented by some excellent food and wine. Thanks are due to Marketing Director Lindsey Hughes for organising the evening. Photos of the occasion can be viewed in the Gallery section of this website.
