19/12/2011 OPYC launched - members and volunteers required!

A little while ago a proposal to set up an OP Yacht Club was unanimously approved by the OP Society Committee, writes Ian Williams (61-63). We also wanted a burgee that would be immediately recognisable to OPs and display our strong links with the College. After much debate we decided to stay true to the OP “Devitt & Moore” flag and launch the club accordingly.

Designed as a “virtual” club, the steering committee modelled the draft Rules on the RYA’s model constitution, keeping everything as simple as possible.  The annual membership fee has been set at £25, the initial fee to include the Club Burgee.  Applications and nominations are now invited for the first Flag Officers and Committee of the Club.  The draft Rules, Application and Nomination forms may be found on the OP website. Copies have also been forwarded by email to all those who have already expressed interest.

The OPYC, like the OPGS (golf), will be separate from the OP Society and be run by the elected officers and committee. A Club Secretary will handle all OPYC administration.  In the first instance all communications – in particular suggestions for events, real and virtual –  should be addressed to myself at woofwilliams@gmail.com

If you sail or own a yacht anywhere in the world, now is the time to step forward and become involved.  And if you believe you can help the new Club in any way whatsoever, do please volunteer!  In the meantime enormous thanks to all those who helped the steering committee, especially Niall Kilgour (63-68), Willie Shuttleworth (66-70), Ian Shuttleworth (57-62), Nigel Hollebone (59-63), Thomas Garnier and chairman Mark Dumas (64-68).
