Successful summer meeting at Hankley Common GC

06/07/2011
An enjoyable day on a splendid course only slightly spoiled by afternoon rain.

Some 25 OP golfers turned out at Hankley Common on July 5th for the annual summer meeting of the OPGS.

OPGS Secretary Charlie Parry had to do some fast footwork early in the day when it was discovered at the last moment that a second society booking clashed with the OPGS. In the event half the OP field started the morning round (a single stableford competition, playing full handicap) from the 1st tee and half from the 10th - a better arrangement than usual as it meant those going off late had more time for lunch for a change.

The course was in outstanding condition following a Regional Qaulifying competition for The Open held at Hankley on June 20, and the morning weather was benign. As a result, scoring was good. Willie Donaldson (off 5) and Robin Knight (off 12) tied for first place with 38pts, Robin winning on a countback on the first nine holes. Charles Llewellyn won the nearest-the-pin award with a fine shot at the tricky 16th to within six feet. The award for the longest drive was declared null-and-void as half the field had not been informed of the correct hole for the competition.

Following an excellent lunch, attended by Lionel Stephens to keep an eye on proceedings, an afternoon Greensome Stableford competition (half combined handicap) was won by the formidable pairing of Willie Donaldson and Richard Parrett with 40 pts from Charles Llewellyn & Andrew Feary with 39 pts and Tom Bond & Robin Knight with 36pts.

Having presented the prizes, Charlie Parry welcomed two new young OPs (Conor Brown & Tom Bond) and revealed that the annual match against the College this year would take place on October 12th at The Berkshire GC. The 2012 summer meeting would be played at Huntercombe GC, near Henley, on Tuesday June 19th.
