05/09/2010 Excellent OPGS outing June 22, 2010
Another outstanding OPGS meeting at Hankley Common GC

OP Chairman Mark Dumas wins the prizes at Hankley Common GC

On the 2nd June 30 OP's enjoyed an fantastic day at Hankley Common Golf Club. This was the second year in succession that the Golf Society had played at Hankley and we were once again treated superbly! The course was in great condition, with fast greens and punishing rough. We were lucky that the sun shone all day helping to produce a competitive, but friendly atmosphere.

In the morning the Society played for the Presidents cup.  A single stableford competition. There were lots of good scores this year as most people realised that to score well you had to keep the ball on the fairways! Mark Dumas won with 44 points playing off 16! He is a member at Hankley so knows where the danger is and avoided it.The runner up was William Donaldson who scored 41 points off a handicap of 4 and went round in 72 gross.

During the morning round we had the add ons of the longest drive, won by William Donaldson (again!) and nearest the pin won by Richard Parrett.  He drove to two and a half feet on a 202 yard par 3, hitting a tree en route.

In the afternoon 28 players competed for the Simon Broome and Stephen Walker Memorial Bowl in a St Andrews greensome stableford competition. Half combined handicaps were used for the purpose of the scoring. The Bowl was won, on count back, by Chris Reed and Charlie Parry who scored 44 points off a combined handicap of 19. The runners up were Mark Dumas and Kingsley Borrett with 44 points off an 11 handicap

We were very fortunate to have a friend of a golfing OP who brought a live scoring system , VPAR, to our society day.  Not only did the system work out our stableford points for each hole but it also gave to us the opportunity to look at the live scores of everyone playing. This meant that competitors could change strategy depending on how they were doing compared to the leaders.  It added an extra dimension to the day and a most enjoyable one at that.

The OP Golf Society was able to welcome some new OPs to the society day this year, including our first female participant. We hope many more younger OPs will arrange to take part next year. Our next OP golf event will be on 12th October when we play our annual match against the College. This will be an afternoon match played at Goring and Streatley GC.  All OPs wishing to play should contact Charlie Parry at  parry1@gotadsl.co.uk

OPs who attended were Kingsley Borrett, Pip Smitham, Ben Harvey, Anthony Clifford, Richard Parrett, William Donaldson. Mark Dumas, Nigel Ackerman, Terry O'Neil, Richard Givan, Robin Knight, Michael Allsop, Nick Beattie, Tim Lee, Robin Hawkins, Simon Witter, Gareth Evans, Sam McCarthy-Primett, Jim McBroom, Lucy Hamblin Rooke, Andrew Feary, George Gale, Charlie Parry, Chris Reed, Charles Donnelly, Richard Sarsfield-Hall, Matt Arnold, David Lewis & William Skinner.
